Withdrawing Your Child from School to Begin Homeschooling: What Parents Need to Know

Making the decision to homeschool is exciting, but before you start buying all the curricula you can get your hands on (we’ve all been there), there’s one important step to take: properly withdrawing your child from school.

The exact process depends on where you live, since homeschool laws vary by state. But in general, most families will need to take a few simple steps:

1) Check Your State’s Homeschool Laws

Every state has different requirements. Some require a notice of intent, while others have additional paperwork or recordkeeping expectations. A quick search for your state’s homeschool regulations is the best place to begin.

2) Notify Your Child’s School

In many cases, parents should send a formal withdrawal letter to the school or their local school board. This creates a paper trail and helps ensure your child is officially withdrawn, which can prevent future attendance issues or confusion.

3) Keep Copies of Everything

Save a copy of your withdrawal letter, any emails, and any paperwork you submit. Good records make homeschooling smoother and give you peace of mind.

4) Begin with a Simple Plan

You do not need to recreate public school at home. Start small. Focus on reading, math, family rhythms, and learning what works best for your child. Homeschooling can be simple, meaningful, and flexible.
